Holy Wells
Many wells have fallen into oblivion and are representative of a different faith era, of a different time and an Ireland long past and at times forgotten, a part of our culture that hasn’t experienced modernization. They are a nostalgic view of Christian Ireland, a stepping back in time, a unique part of our identity and culture; old religious statues are left behind, broken ceramics, items of clothing and coins all strewn around the entrance to the well. Although some of our country’s holy wells have been neglected with the passing of time, and many now forgotten, there are many other sites throughout the country where local people still come to gather; to pray; to remember; just to linger…
